• 'Reflections in a flooded Donegal bog land.'

I have found that with age comes an ultimate refinement. You will find that too. I have the freedom at last to quarry light from my experiences, to reflect and to harvest.

Having worked hard all my life I have come to a point where the time which comes towards me undefined needs to be molded with possibilities. I discovered that the passion for the visual arts which sustained my career was begging for another form of expression, knawing at me until I took up the challenge of painting to relieve the inner agitation. The 'itch'.

My paintings are inspired by the bog lands of South West Donegal. By the nature of the subject, in my opinion, they demand to be painted with strength, confidence and a robust use of paint. Not unlike the land and the people who inhabit it. The paintings are often not grand landscapes but what I call 'Bits of Things' They are places which have no real names, moments in time which are not significant, bits of a bog land where people might pass the odd time and not really notice the rich beauty in a spear of grass, a smudge of bog cotton reflected in a flooded bog hole, a blasted bit of a tree a pillow of heather draped over an abandoned bog face. and a black faced sheep with her new born lamb standing proud on her back. It’s my intention to bring them to the attention of the viewer.

Am I any good? I don’t know and care less. You see, there is that freedom of thought which comes with age asserting itself. The young dont have it all their own way. What I do know is that I paint with passion for the subject, with honesty and with an enthusiasm to share an experience. Nothing more. I am thankful I now walk, heal and thrive in the beautiful place which is South Donegal.

Welcome to my blog

I have been painting the area of South Donegal for the past 6 years. It is a place that I love with a passion. I can lose myself and find myself there. I thought you would like to join me on a journey which is so far from the stress and strain of this increasingly complicated world.
